1 in 6 'have called in experts to fix DIY disasters'

Around one in six people have had to call in DIY experts to repair or fix their own home improvement efforts, according to research.

Zurich's study found that nearly 40 per cent of homeowners who asked for professional help were trying to save money by doing the tasks themselves, with around ten per cent waiting over a year before correcting mistakes they have made.

Common DIY work undertaken by the public includes tasks such as painting and bleeding radiators, as well as bathroom renovations, fixing a boiler and rewiring electrics.

It was also revealed that 47 per cent of homeowners do not inform their insurer of their plans to make home improvement work.

Steve Gilbert, Zurich's technical underwriting manager, said: "It's a good idea to call your insurer to check that you are covered in the event of DIY going wrong, and certainly to make sure that any structural changes won't void your policy."
